Clothes Dryers

Which type of clothes dryer is best? Let’s start by looking at your options:

Simpson_dryer

Tumble Dryer

This is the traditional style of dryer you’ve undoubtedly seen before. It works by blowing hot air through your clothes until they’re dry. This creates humidity which is why some dryers can make your laundry steamy.

Pros:

  • Cheap to buy
  • Can be wall mounted
  • Can be stacked on top of a front loading washer (with a kit)

Cons:

  • Not very energy efficient
  • Can cause wear and tear on clothes
  • Limited range of drying cycles
  • Requires a well ventilated laundry space

Condenser Dryer

Condenser dryers extract moisture from clothing, which is then drained away as condensed water. They are ideal for apartments as they don’t require a well ventilated laundry.

Pros:

  • Good for apartments
  • More energy efficient
  • Kinder to your clothes
  • Wider range of drying cycles

Cons:

  • Cannot be wall mounted
  • More expensive

Heat Pump Condenser Dryer

Heat pump dryers are incredibly energy efficient – most come with a phenomenal 6 star efficiency rating. We’ll save you the scientific jargon; the bottom line is that these dryers will save you money in the long run.

Pros:

  • Good for apartments
  • Maximum energy efficiency
  • Kinder to your clothes
  • Wider range of drying cycles

Cons:

  • Most expensive type of dryer
  • Cannot be wall mounted

What is a Sensor Dryer?

A sensor dryer can be a normal tumble dryer, or a condenser dryer. It means that there are intelligent sensors inside the dryer that can switch the dryer off the moment the load is dry.

It’s worth paying more for a dryer with sensor technology, because it will prevent energy wastage.

This style of washing machine features a washer on one side, and a spin tub on the other. The user must manually remove the wet laundry from the wash tub once the cycle has finished, and place in the spin tub.

Advantages:

  • Allows you to reuse water for multiple loads
  • You can spin in one tub while washing in the other
  • You can manually fill the tub with water
  • Gives the user greater control over wash process
  • Additional items can be added mid wash

Disadvantages:

  • Requires manual labour to operate
  • Takes up quite a lot of space
  • Only water efficient if you reuse the water for several cycles
  • You can’t spin an entire load at once – must split into 2 spin loads

What Size Washing Machine Do You Need?

Please use the following as a rough guide:

  • Small household (1-2 people): 5.5kg or smaller
  • Medium household (3-4 people): 5.5kg-8kg
  • Large household (4+ people): 8kg or larger

Other Washing Machine Features to Consider

Water Efficiency

If water efficiency is a concern, you should buy a front load washing machine. Look for a machine with a 4 star or higher rating.

Energy Efficiency

Likewise, front load washing machines tend to be the most energy efficient. Considering the rising cost of electricity, an efficient machine will save you money in the long run.

Automatic Load Sensing

Available in the more advanced models, this feature uses sensor technology to figure out how much water is needed, and how long the wash cycle needs to be. This makes the machine easier to operate, and also helps it to run more efficiently.

Programs

Generally speaking, the more expensive your machine, the more programs it will have. Have a look at the list of programs to see if they are suited to your needs.

Dimensions

Measure your available space and then check the dimensions of the washing machine before you buy. You should also measure the doors and hallways leading up to your laundry to make sure you’ll be able to get it in.

Spin Cycle

The faster the spin cycle, the quicker your laundry will dry. Please note: fast spin speeds aren’t available on all wash cycles.
