When you’re buying a new sink for your kitchen, the biggest decision you’ll need to make is whether you want a top mounted or an undermount sink:
A top mounted sink is the cheapest option, and it’s also the easiest style of sink to install.
Also known as an ‘inset sink’ this style features either one or two bowls, with a flat drying area attached to the bowls.
These sinks are made from high quality stainless steel that is hygienic and durable.
This style of sink is designed to be installed beneath your kitchen bench. If you have a marble bench top, an undermount sink is the best choice.
These sinks are very stylish to look at, and they’re perfect for kitchens with a minimalist aesthetic. However they can be tricky – and therefore expensive – to install.
They are made from high quality materials that are hygienic and durable. Single and double undermount configurations are available.

Looking to buy a new dishwasher? Read this guide to make sure you get the best one!
Let’s have a look at the different types of dishwashers you can buy:
As the name suggests, a freestanding dishwasher is designed to stand on its own. This is the cheapest option to install because you won’t need to get your cabinets or benches altered. Just make sure you have enough free space in your kitchen to fit it in.
Please note: these dishwashers are sometimes referred to as ‘under bench dishwashers’. You can install them in your cabinetry, but the door of the dishwasher cannot be altered to match your décor.
There are two types of built-in dishwasher: fully integrated and semi integrated:
Fully integrated dishwashers are designed to ‘disappear’ into your cabinetry. The control panel will be hidden from sight – in most models it will be located along the top rim of the door. If you want your dishwasher to match your cabinets, you’ll need to get a custom furniture panel fitted – for which you will need to enlist the services of a professional.
This style of dishwasher is also designed to be installed into your cabinets. However you will be able to see the control panel from the outside. For best results, we recommend that you enlist the services of a professional installer.
This style of dishwasher is exclusive to Fisher & Paykel. It opens in the same way as a filing cabinet – making it really easy to load and unload.
DishDrawer dishwashers are available in single or double drawer configurations. Single drawers are perfect for small households – as they help to conserve water and energy usage. Meanwhile, double drawers are great for people who do a lot of cooking – as you can run a delicate cycle in the top drawer for glassware, and a heavy cycle in the bottom drawer for pots and pans.
Perfect for apartments, slimline dishwashers have a narrow width. They’re best suited for small kitchens, or for small households of around 1-2 people.
This style of dishwasher is perfect for renters, as it can be placed on top of your kitchen bench (connected to the sink) and then moved easily when you move home. They only have a limited capacity, however, and so are best suited for smaller households.
The term ‘place settings’ refers to the capacity of the dishwasher. Here is our quick guide to getting the right size:
Place settings are irrelevant if you can’t fit your dishwasher into your kitchen! Please remember to measure the space thoroughly before you buy.
Although water and energy efficient dishwashers tend to be more expensive, the investment is definitely worth it. An eco-friendly dishwasher will save you money in the long run, and it will also help to reduce your household’s environmental impact.
Look out for the star rating – the more stars, the more efficient your appliance will be.
Have a look at the list of wash cycles before you buy. The more advanced types of dishwashers will provide a greater variety of cycle options (for example, selected models come with a hygiene wash, which is great for people with allergies).
‘Sensor wash’ is a good one to look out for. This means the dishwasher will automatically set the best cycle length and temperature based on what you are washing.
This option will make it easy to take advantage of off-peak energy rates.
If noise is a concern, have a look to see if a decibel rating has been provided by the manufacturer. Anything quieter than 50dB is considered to be very good.
Drying cycles are convenient, however they do tend to use extra electricity.
Generally speaking, the more expensive the dishwasher, the more flexible (and durable) the interior will be. It’s very handy to be able to adjust the height of the top rack, in case you need to place large pots or long-stemmed wine glasses inside the dishwasher.
Filters trap solid food particles. If you are lazy, you should buy a dishwasher with a self-cleaning filter – otherwise your dishwasher will start to smell bad!
